Welcome, new reviewers!

This month, we welcome Josiah to the nuthouse. Thank you for helping us fix up the cyberpunk section!

Reviews Needed!

After putting up the top 100, I notice some huge, gaping holes in the reviews. If you have read lots of books by Orson Scott Card, Anne McAffrey's Dragon series, Larry Niven's Ringworld, Known Space, or Man-Kzin series, Anne Rice, or Isaac Asimov, please consider writing something for them, or at least an introduction to their work. Thank you to everyone who has helped to fill these! As usual, you can review anyone you want that's related to the topic, but I would really appreciate any of these you could work on. Remember, you're a reviewer if I've ever asked you to be one, even if you haven't written any reviews yet or even voted. Go for it! Arigatou!

Top 100

We're done! Thank you to everyone who voted. We had 10 voters this year, and the improvement that made in the list is obvious, as there are many fewer ties, and there were many more books read and rated by more reviewers. The more people who vote, the better a sample we get on the list, so if you didn't vote this year, consider doing so next year. It doesn't take that long!

The scoring method was different this year, as an attempt to increase the chances of books that were rated by more reviewers. The results seem a little more reasonable this way. Tell me what you think. Next year, the rating system will change slightly to decrease the positive bias that most reviewers (including myself!) seem to have.

Who can you review?

Note about authors: it has recently come to my attention that some reviewers think they can only write reviews for authors on the list. THIS IS NOT TRUE! You can write about *any* author in *any* of the genres that we cover- and we're flexible! Don't limit yourself. Go crazy! Write a review every time you finish a new book- or re-read an old one. Tell the whole world what you think (and why, if possible). Have fun!

Also, you can review an author who has already been reviewed, if you have something to contribute to the subject. Some possibilities are: you read the book at a different life-stage, or interpreted it completely differently, or naturally have a different perspective (e.g., Christian and agnostic views of Lewis). Before you do this, though, please make sure you do honestly have something to say that hasn't already been said, but don't just say "I disagree", either. Say why you disagree (or agree). Impolite or derogatory entries will not be posted. Thanks!

In your reviews, please don't forget to note the rating you give the book (G, PG, PG13, PG16, R). It makes things much easier on me, and I won't keep pestering you.... ^_^

Tallies

Last spring's contest was won by Kristin, who sent in 5 reviews for Ursula LeGuin. She will receive her chocolate soon.

Bina and Sarah also won. This contest is over, but perhaps I'll do another one later on if people seem like they'll respond. Thanks to everyone!

Here's the ongoing tally for each individual member. These numbers will be used to help me choose the reviewer of the month.

Name January February Total Notes
Bina 12 15 78 58 book reviews, 6 author reviews, 1 series review, 2 nomination lists, 2 voting lists, 8 spell-checked pages, 1 author award
Dorothy 1 0 1 1 voting list
Dragon 13 19 59 6 author reviews, 3 series reviews, 37 book reviews, 1 nomination list, 1 voting list, 5 site banners, 6 site images
Erika 1 12 13 2 series reviews, 10 book reviews, 1 voting list
Josiah 0 0 1 1 book review
Kristin 0 1 8 1 nomination list, 2 voting lists, 5 book reviews
Mimi 0 0 1 1 voting list
Roberto 0 0 11 2 author reviews, 8 book reviews, 1 voting list
Sarah 0 1 21 1 nomination list, 2 voting lists, 2 author reviews, 16 book reviews

Terasu 0 1 2 2 voting lists
Tim 6 17 76 2 nomination lists, 2 voting lists, 13 author/collaboration reviews, 56 book reviews, 1 bibliography, 2 series reviews.

Thank you, Sarah, for those long-awaited Narnia reviews. You are an awesome Wellesley chick (or is that Chellesley wick?).

How I figure tallies

Okay, this has gotten kind of confusing, so I'm changing the system (again). So really, tallies from months past are general ideas, because they weren't calculated the same way. If someone is upset by this system, please remember: I don't award based purely on the numbers- general contribution to the site is included. That means helpful comments about the site, broken links checks, punctuation, spelling, grammer, and html checks, etc. A person who talks to me 2-3 times a month about these things is making an investment of their time. So are people who mention the site to others, add it to their link lists, etc. Don't think I don't notice the wonderful things all of you do for the site- I just may forget to thank you for them. That's why the award exists ^_^.

Nomination lists with a reasonable number of nominations will be counted as 1. A complete voting list (all books which one has read and remembers are rated) is 1. A review of a single book is 1. A review of a single author/author combination is 1. A complete bibliography of an author or large series is 1. A one-paragraph/short review of a trilogy (tetrology, short series, etc) is 1.

A bio is 0.

A multiple-paragraph description of a book is 1 unless it's a dissertation, in which case it may get its own page and be a 2 (I don't want people to have to wade through your senior thesis to get to the rest of the series, but if you put that much work into it, it should at least go on the site). Multiple-paragraph descriptions of a series will probably merit a 2 unless I choose otherwise.

Other stuff, such as link-checking the whole site, or producing the award images (hint hint!) will be given number in relation to how much time/annoyance they take up. Please link check after the kind-of-weekly updates, since I fix lots of problems each week. Spell-checking pages (highlight page, copy, paste into word, list misspelled words) will be rated as a 1/2 for each page- please skim for grammer, too.

Anything, on this list or not, rates a hug ^_^.

Bio

No, not the subject in school- the thing you write for me if you want people to know who you are and what you like so they know how to take your reviews...

You are not required to write a bio, but I would greatly appreciate it if you would. Please limit yourself to a paragraph. You can tell what styles you like, what genre, which authors, anything you'd like about yourself as a reader or writer. The purpose of these is to acquaint the users with your personality as a reader so they can make judgments about the applicability of your review to their lives. Hey, you can even plug your favorite author or book if you want.
